Onigilly [Oh-Knee-Ghee-Lee] recently opened its first branch store in San Francisco’s Financial District. Serving traditional Japanese onigiri, also known as rice balls in addition to rice bowls and salad bowls, the new concept restaurant follows Chipotle’s service format and offers customers to customize their meals according to flavor and preference of diet.
Customers have a choice between an onigiri set, rice bowl or noodle salad for meals. Each meals are offered with a wide assortment of fresh and organic vegetables, meat, or seafood as a topping. Veggies include (ume) pickled plums, (teriyaki tofu) grilled organic tofu with ginger honey teriyaki sauce, (hijiki seaweed) soy braised seaweed with shredded carrots, (nasu) fried eggplant marinated in garlic ginger soy, (natto) fermented soy beans and (renkon) sautéed lotus root with sesame oil, soy sauce, honey and japanese chili peppers. Meat toppings include (soboro) ginger soy braised ground angus beef, (chashu) pork fillet cooked in soy sauce, mirin, sake and sugar, (terikayki chicken) organic chicken with agave teriyaki sauce and (bacon) bacon cooked with garlic butter, sake and chili sauce. Seafood toppings include (miso tuna salad) wild albacore mixed with miso aioli), (spicy shrimp) bay shrimp mixed with habanero aioli and pollock roe, (tarako) marinated pollock roe in spicy sauce, (unagi) fresh water eel, (kana) Canadian snow crab mixed with lemon agave aioli, (tempura shrimp) honey soy dipped tempura fried shrimp and (sake) grilled salmon with sea salt.
The Onigilly set comes with a choice of three onigiri in addition to edamame, pickles and a side salad. The rice bowl meal includes a choice of three toppings in addition to edamame, pickles and a side salad while the salad bowl includes a choice of three toppings mixed with organic greens and tofu noodles in addition to one plain seaweed wrapped onigiri.
