Night in Shanghai

07 Jan Night in Shanghai

Night in Shanghai novel by Nicole Mones showcases the multicultural and moneyed scene of prewar Shanghai in 1936. Based on true events, Night in Shanghai centers on classically trained African-American pianist Thomas Greene from Baltimore as he is recruited to Shanghai to become a bandleader for the popular Kansas City Kings. There he meets Song Yuhua, a beautiful Chinese woman who is bonded to crime lord Du Yuesheng to pay off her father’s gambling debts. “Greene leads the high life while Song, dreaming of a newer different China, takes up with the Communist underground. Only when the city stands on the verge of major collapse as the Japanese march in, do their lives seriously intertwine.” Link
